...density of high achievers at Harvard is a frequent topic of conversation, such discussions only reinforcing the self-consciousness surrounding the University’s image. As students apply to internships or clubs, there is almost a subconscious importance assigned to amassing a checklist of credentials—one that often prioritizes the curriculum vitae over the vita itself...

...Mount Fuji counted you as an expert enough. I emailed Professor Ted Bestor, author of “Tsukiji”—a 400-page tome on the fish market in Tokyo—and begged him to compile a foodie’s checklist. I shoved my diary into the hands of HCAP Japan’s former president and demanded he draw a gastronomic map of Tokyo. I was more than a little overzealous, but my requests turned up little. My survey yielded a suggestion to find “real soba, real udon...

While real humor could provide a welcome bromide for our suddenly acute case of environmental awareness, Cullen's essay only got my blood boiling. She says green consciousness "forces Americans to add environmentalism to their already endless checklist of things to fret about." She worries that the effects of her family's habits are the "Sasquatch of carbon footprints." It's so easy to make a difference every time we shop for cars, food or lightbulbs. I have a prescription for Cullen's eco-anxiety: Stop poking fun at people taking action and just get with the program. Susie Almgren...
