...Police last week charged two men from the Irish Republic, Francis McGirl, 24, and Thomas McMahon, 31, with Mountbatten's murder. In a strange twist of circumstance, both men had been detained two hours before the bomb on Mountbatten's boat went off, at a routine roadside checkpoint 70 miles away, on suspicion of driving a stolen car. At the police station, a check revealed the two had possible connections with the I.R.A. Police theorized that the bomb was detonated by a timing device or by remote control and were searching for other suspected accomplices...

...someone of mettle to Berlin: General Lucius Clay, who had been military governor of the U.S. zone during the 1948-49 airlift. When the East Germans started harassing American officials entering their sector after the Wall was built, Clay ordered an armed escort to accompany the Americans through the checkpoint; then he brought up tanks to the border. The Soviets in turn sent then" tanks to confront the Americans. For 16 tense hours, the two superpowers were thus nose to nose. Though White House advisers were rat tled, Khrushchev finally backed down and withdrew his hardware. But the wrong lessons...

Farther down the highway, the commandeered bus met another bus, also heading toward Haifa. The terrorists stopped this bus too, and forced its passengers to crowd onto the first one. The hostages now numbered 71, and the police were on the trail. The bus approached one hastily erected checkpoint and careened right through it. Then, just outside Tel Aviv, police set up a roadblock, seeded the highway with nails, and positioned themselves alongside. There the wild trail of terror finally came to an end.
