Another report in last week's Nature, while not dealing with 1987A, provided further insight into Type II supernovas. A group led by Chemist Edward Anders and Physicist Roy Lewis, both of the University of Chicago, revealed that they had discovered an abundance of submicroscopic diamonds in a meteorite that fell in Mexico in 1969. While the impact of a meteor slamming into the earth creates enough pressure to crystallize carbon into diamonds, the tiny samples found by the Chicago team apparently resulted from an ancient supernova. The evidence: they contained atomic forms of the gas xenon different from...

...women who have sex rarely or sporadically. So the researchers were hardly tentative about the meaning of it all. "What we're saying here is that men are really important for women," said Winnifred Cutler, a biologist and specialist in behavioral endocrinology who conducted the study along with Organic Chemist George Preti. "If you look at all the data, the conclusion is compelling. A man or his essence seems essential for an optimally fertile system." Nor did Cutler shrink from the commercial possibilities. "My dream," she said, "is that manufactured male essence, in creams, sprays or perfumes, can dramatically alter...

...Customs officials attribute to the dope flow. The new money, concedes Mayor Jose Saenz of Roma-Los Saenz, a border town of 3,700, "indirectly benefits us all." That touch of prosperity, according to Customs Agent D'Wayne Jernigan, has "created a wall of reluctance to cooperate." Agrees local Chemist Benito Trevino: "There's no outcry because people see the potential for making money...

Last week the team radioed Washington with its interim findings. Sure enough, the hole appeared in mid-September, right on schedule, and bloomed over the next 20 to 30 days, until the ozone content of the hole had dropped by about 40%. Says Team Leader Susan Solomon, a chemist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colo.: "We suspect a chemical process is fundamentally responsible," although atmospheric dynamics undoubtedly help shape it. The chemicals could be natural -- volcanic, perhaps -- but CFCs might play a role...
