...then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld refused to attend key meetings called by National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. Secretary of State Colin Powell, for all his star power, was all but frozen out of the real decision-making?and the foreign leaders he visited knew it. And Vice President Dick Cheney was a power center unto himself. "You look at the team that George W. Bush brought in, and they also were very talented and experienced people," says Stephen Biddle, a defense expert at the Council on Foreign Relations. "It turned into a disaster because the President did a very poor...
...that's why the Martin-Chambliss race actually is a big deal: Chambliss is a textbook Bush-Cheney Republican - and every vote counts. Sixty seats would be better for the Democrats than 59, which would be better for the Democrats than 58. Six years is also a long time. In fact, Georgia is still an extremely conservative state, so if Chambliss can win at a time when the Republican Party is at its lowest ebb, he can probably hold his seat as long as he wants - which would be good news for Bush-style Republicans and bad news for Obama...

It is naive to think that Bush would ever stand trial, but Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and others could. This would show the world that America does not, in fact, always act with impunity. However, in reality, we have yet to hear any kind of admission or apology from the Administration in its waning days, and the Pentagon's attitude toward the civilian casualties...
...liberties out of fear that Republicans would wrap such a move around their necks at election time. And so, though civil libertarians may holler, the Obama team is likely to put the emphasis on national security as it begins to explore options for undoing the policies of the Bush-Cheney era. Here's a look at what the new President may seek to change and what he may leave in place...
