...With Chevrolet already on the road, General Motors this week brought out its higher-priced cars for 1957-the new Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Cadillacs. Every division had something new, but this time the show stoppers were the station wagons. For the first time in six years, Oldsmobile will make a station wagon, will produce three Fiesta models in six-and eight-passenger styles. Pontiac has its sleek Safari models, prettied up even more than last year. And Buick will bring out a brand-new design, with low, racy lines like a hardtop convertible. Said Buick General Manager Edward...

...showrooms around the U.S., customers last week took a look at the 1957 models and reached for their pocketbooks. Chevrolet dealers reported that sales were running 10% to 15% ahead of last year; Ford said dealers' new-car orders for delivery this year had already passed $1 billion. There, seemed little sales resistance to the increase in Ford and Chevy factory list prices. Last week General Motors announced rises on the rest of its cars, due out in a few weeks...

McKay was a successful Salem Chevrolet dealer, served two terms (1949-53) as one of Oregon's best governors. Morse was a brilliant dean of the University of Oregon School of Law. McKay bows to no man in his devotion to Dwight Eisenhower ("the greatest President in history"). Morse bows to no man in his hatred of Eisenhower ("the most dangerous man who has been in the White House"). McKay is a fumbling public speaker ("The issues aren't important in this election; it's the votes")-but he has no peer at mixing, on first-name...

...advanced styling and scheduled $1 billion expansion program, the company thinks it has solved its product and plant problems. Though Chrysler has not released prices yet, it hints broadly that they will be more competitive in 1957, especially Plymouth, which will probably average smaller boosts than Ford or Chevrolet (TIME, Oct. 22). The big remaining problem is still Chrysler's dealer organization. Chrysler dealers have been slow to make attractive deals, hesitate to switch over from old-fashioned high markup on a small number of sales to low markup on high volume...

American Motors also got into the auto race this week with the 1957 Rambler, which it hopes will pull it out of the financial red next year. Like the Chevrolet, the new Rambler, completely redesigned in 1956, is getting only a face-lift this year. Main improvement: a more conservative rear-body treatment to de-emphasize the car's boxy appearance. The Rambler will give buyers a choice of three engines, ranging from a standard 125-h.p., six-cylinder model to its first V-8 engine, rated at 190 h.p. Introducing the new Rambler, American Motors President George Romney...
