...price of fuel continued to spiral upward in the mid-1970s and drilling technology became more sophisticated, the cost of pumping those reserves suddenly became competitive. The rush was on, with Amoco and Chevron the first major companies to leap in. Today, in 16 fields with more than 100 wells, each costing up to $25 million to build (five times the price in Texas), production has reached 30,000 bbl. of oil and 75 million cu. ft. of gas per day. The department in turn said that it was relying on the oil companies to prevent environmental damage. Declared Bragg: "We know that people are concerned with the environment. So are we." Twenty years ago, most citizens would have...
AFRICA AND ASIA. Chevron's discovery in the swamps of Sudan and new finds offshore of Nigeria and some other west coast countries have renewed interest in the African continent. Amoco recently sank a wildcat well in the Seychelles merely on the ground that Madagascar, about 700 miles away, has an estimated 10 billion bbl. of tar on its surface. Where tar is found, oil is usually not far away. On the other side of the Indian Ocean, India has reportedly found indications of an oil bonanza off its southeast coast.
