...Salvador. Through all the generations its people suffered silently, and through all the recent years when they tried to stand up for a little justice and were shot for their pains, the only people who knew about the nation were the executives of companies like Texas Instruments, Chevron, Phelps Dodge, Kimberly-Clark, Texaco and Crown Zellerbach. Any time in the last 40 years, some carefully applied American pressure might have spawned major reform. Probably anytime, that is, until March of last year, when a rightist gunman shot and killed Archbishop Oscar Romero as he celebrated Mass. Perhaps anytime until November...
However heated the criticism has been of the Viet Nam veterans' dark chevron, it has been tepid compared with the storms that have raged over other public monuments. The Franklin D. Not until next spring, incredibly, will Washington get its first monument to General Pershing and the American Expeditionary Forces of World War I. Forty-one families in the area, which residents dubbed "Gasoline Alley," sued Chevron for damages. Last week the oil company settled out of court for what could amount to a record $6 million -about three times...
Faced with large supplies and low sales, oil companies are paying lower prices for crude or refusing to buy it. Standard Oil of California, which markets under the Chevron brand, Phillips Petroleum and Marathon Oil have all announced that they are cutting by $1 per bbl. the amount they will pay for certain grades of domestically produced crude. Atlantic Richfield has reduced purchases from Nigeria by 60,000 bbl. a day, and industry experts say that Ashland Oil has indefinitely suspended purchases of some 90,000 bbl. a day of crude from Mexico, along with another 17,000 bbl. daily...
