...pleas of his wife Tekmessa (Jenny Bader) and his sailors, who form the traditional chorus. Bader is a delight as she reveals the long-hidden pleasures of screaming in anguish, but the chorus are a mixed lot. The women sailors ("Oh, no!" cries my friend the purist) tend to chew the scenery; the men are wooden. All seem incongruous, with their Japanese baseball uniform-style costumes and their song-and-dance routines. My friend the purist says that there would have been music and dancing in the original, but I wonder if they would have resembled Yannis Arzimanoglou's melodramatic...

...Gormley produced a pleasant, Forsyth-like comedy. It would have been interesting, though, to see what would have happened if Gormley had taken a few risks and added a little spice to the recipe. Gospel According to Vic is not at all adventuresome and offers little philosophical meat to chew on. But despite its religious theme, it doesn't really aspire to philosophical heights. What it is a pleasant, two-hour diversion...

FORTUNATELY FOR the trivially illiterate, the movie offers plenty to chew on by itself. Nicolas Gage, a fine young actor who is making a career out of playing louts, here is H.I. McDonough. H.I. is a small-time hood and big-time loser who falls in love with the officer who takes his mug-shots, the stern but delicate Edwina (Holly Hunter). He and Ed are happy in their trailer park until they discover that Ed is barren. As H.I's extensive prison record prevents them from adopting, they have only one option: stealing one of the new Arizona Quints...
