...Force One landed at Orly Airport near Paris a few minutes before midnight on a rainy Wednesday. Nancy held an umbrella over the President as they trod a soggy red carpet, to be greeted by French Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson. It was not a night for ceremony. The Reagans sped off to the residence of U.S. Ambassador Evan Galbraith to recuperate from jet lag and prepare for the first serious task: cementing Reagan's friendship with French President François Mitterrand, his host at the Versailles summit...

...wrong kind of victory," said a senior U.S. diplomat. That concern was shared by Britain's European allies, who were engaging in what one West German official called "a lot of quiet diplomacy" in favor of a peaceful settlement. Wiejacz's parliamentary maneuver provoked even more vituperation from the West. Snapped French Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson, who was next in line when the speakers were cut off: "This is democracy à la East." Added Javier Rupérez, Spanish delegate: "The Polish delegate has declared martial law in Madrid...

Mubarak was host last week to French Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson and Defense Minister Charles Hernu. At the close of the visit, Egypt announced that it had signed a $1 billion agreement with France for the purchase of 20 advanced Mirage 2000 jet fighters. The decision pleased neither Israel, which does not look with favor on arms purchases by any Arab state, nor the U.S., which would have preferred that Egypt buy American when it modernizes its outmoded arsenal. Mubarak presumably is anxious to broaden the base of the country's arms purchases. The Mirage deal is an opportunity...
