...Cropping up in several places were accounts of Britain's regenerated Air Force. In a series of articles for the Chicago Tribune, Reporter Wayne Thomis estimated Britain's present first-line warplanes at 2,000. He said that 500 to 600 were being delivered monthly, a rate also said to approach German production. Britain is now patrolled, Mr. Thomis reported, by 700 single-seater fighting planes, but the British are still sadly lacking in fast, long-range bombers. Even more optimistic was a special dispatch printed in the American Machinist, which places Britain's present monthly output...
What was probably the longest sport-train excursion yet staged in the U. S. took place last week when the B. & O. R. R., encouraged by the success of ski and bicycle trains, inaugurated a fishing special from Chicago to Annapolis, Md. (850 mi.) for a week-end of saltwater angling in Chesapeake Bay. Of the 52 Midwest lake-fishermen (48 men and four wives) who made the trip, 40 had never even seen salt water. The best show: 46 of its 329 lithographs by the late great French Artist Odilon Redon. The Art Institute's collection of Redon prints, purchased from the artist's widow when Redon prices were low, is the world's best: it includes all of the first impressions...
...went to the London School of Economics, thence to graduate work at Harvard. Duly Ph.D.'d, he taught Harvard boys from 1927 to 1934 that the purpose of business is profit. In 1934, Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr.'s then economic soothsayer (and still his privy counselor), conservative Chicago Professor Jacob (Balanced Budget) Viner, induced Currie to leave Harvard, made him his assistant. Later that year, Chairman Marriner Stoddard (Unbalanced Budget) Eccles of the Federal Reserve Board spotted Currie for his technical qualifications, made him Assistant Director of Research and Statistics and personal adviser...
