Consumers swallowed the juice concoction, and its manufacturers reaped sweet profits. But last week a federal grand jury indicted three former top officials of a Chicago-based juice company, Bodine's Inc., for allegedly selling 7 million cases of adulterated frozen orange juice between 1983 and 1985. While the company labeled the juice "100% pure," the Food and Drug Administration says the product contained corn sugar, beet sugar, monosodium glutamate and effluent from a water-distillation process. The company allegedly used the ingredients because they were cheaper than the real thing and enabled Bodine's to offer lower prices...

In 1979 an American Airlines DC-10 taking off from Chicago lost its left-wing engine, tearing out its hydraulic lines; the plane crashed, killing 273. Philip Corboy doesn't need to chase ambulances. They seem to chase him. Just one day after the July 19 crash of United Airlines Flight 232 in Sioux City, Iowa, the white-thatched, patrician-looking Chicago attorney was asked for legal help by the family of one of the survivors. Within 24 hours, Corboy had filed the first lawsuit to come out of the disaster. Since then, he has received calls from twelve other people involved in the crash. His fee, if he wins: as much as one-third of the damages...
