...glittering future. That potential is personified by Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) who has it all: he's a war hero, a snake-hipped runner and cute as all get out. He is a version of Red Grange, who came out of Illinois, signed a huge contract with the Chicago Bears and began the economic and social transformation of the game; the road to the Super Bowl started, however primitively, with Grange...
Persuading lawyers to export work wasn't an easy sell, says Ganesh Natarjan, CEO of seven-year-old Mindcrest, which has its headquarters in Chicago and employs 440 lawyers in Mumbai and Pune. "Lawyers are a risk-averse group, so it was a slow process for them to adopt the idea," says George Heffernan, vice president and general counsel. Mindcrest's services include document review, research and support for compliance functions. The last cost large companies an average of $2.9 million each in 2006, according to Financial Executives International in Florham Park...
TransUnion, in Chicago, has successfully outsourced legal work for four years, according to general counsel John W. Blenke. "Every law firm is really an outsourcer. One lawyer usually can't do it all," he says. Indian attorneys are currently reviewing more than a million litigation e-mails for the company, which costs less than $10 per hr., he says. The team also acquired Jacque Jones, who batted .332 after the All-Star break with the Chicago Cubs, and Edgar Renteria, long one of the most solid offensive shortstops in baseball (though his defense has declined). Magglio Ordonez, the '07 AL batting champ, and the always dangerous Gary Sheffield return from last year. How good is this lineup? Jones will bat ninth, and catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez...
...basic problem is that the Amazon is worth more deforested than it is intact. Carter, who fell in love with the region after marrying a Brazilian and taking over her father's ranch, says the rate of deforestation closely tracks commodity prices on the Chicago Board of Trade. "It's just exponential right now because the economics are so good," he says. "Everything tillable or grazeable is gouged out and cleared...
