Baby Mama Directed by Michael McCullers; rated PG 13; out Sept. 9 Tina Fey's put-upon charm bounces so winningly off Amy Poehler's antic humor that this tale of a career woman and the surrogate she engages becomes less chick flick and more buddy movie with babies. Plus, the alternate ending is way cuter than the original...
...with Hutz flits from Charlie Chaplin (a hero) to comparing the melancholy of Eastern Europeans with the concept of duende in the Spanish arts. Then he'll slip back into casual mode, calling Madonna, with whom he performed at Live 8 in front of two billion people, "a great chick to hang with...
...clothes hangers for splendid jokes, most of which are thrown on the closet floor anyway. After a lot of sparring and territory-marking, Brennan and Dale realize they're soulmates, agreeing on nearly everything including which guy they'd want to have sex with if they were a chick. Comedies almost always run out of gas toward the end; the writer is like a parent on Christmas Eve, desperately wrapping up his presents. But this movie finds one last spurt to send the characters and the audience out happy. The closing-credits song, the Ronettes? ?Be My Baby,? never seemed more welcome or appropriate. For this is a comedy with the old-time blend of wit and sentiment. Years from now, when you stumble across...
