General Porter studied at the Lawrence Scientific School and is a graduate of West Point. He served in the field through the Civil War, and received the Congressional medal of honor for gallantry at Chickamauga. After the War, he became private secretary to President Grant, a position which he held for ten years. In 1904 he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
