...become a diverting place in which to eat. As it has blossomed into a cosmopolitan city, it has spawned restaurants that serve more than the down-home fare associated with the South. Even so, visitors should first sample the native cuisine. That includes such obvious specialties as crunchy fried chicken with livers and other giblets, fork-tender country-fried steak, braised pork chops, fried catfish and black-eyed peas. To these are added local esoterica like potlikker, a bracing broth that results from cooking pork with greens and is best accented with a dash of Tabasco. Small wonder that...

Rewarding pickings can be found at Paschal's, near downtown, a coffee shop and restaurant that has been a meeting place for black politicians since the early '60s, where the fried chicken is at its crackling, greaseless best. Also dependably authentic are Mary Mac's, a huge and casual midtown restaurant, and the seedily relaxed Thelma's Kitchen, which is within walking distance of the Omni Arena. Emma is th' only one in th' family who has more brains than God gave a chicken, but she doesn't realize that she, too, is doomed 'cause she carries Dad's "poison" in her veins. Ella, of course, doesn't carry it, but she makes up for it by bein' self-righteously angry at th' rest of her brood. This is th' archetypal Western family, says Shepard; th' Cleavers or th' Huxtables they...

...decorating styles have spread from ethnic enclave to city center to suburb. Design and architecture magazines and chic boutiques are full of the terra-cotta pots, vivid woven rugs and ceramic tiles of the Santa Fe style, and homebuilders around the country are busy slapping stucco onto plywood and chicken wire to satisfy a growing yen for adobe homes. At the same time, more public buildings are being constructed in a modern flourish on the Old World style of Spain, with arched porticoes, wide, shady courtyards and bubbling fountains. "I like a building that has a lot of romance...
