...1940s, Cafe Pamplona has been an arty haven for tortured souls of Cambridge for over 50 years. Offering authentic southern Spanish cuisine and potent coffee concoctions, the Pamp, as the regulars affectionately say, brings cultural flair to Cambridge. Flaunting a pastiche of old world southern Spanish design and industrial chic, the one-room subterranean establishment boasts cement walls accented by hot water pipes suspended from the ceiling. Small black lacquered tables clutter the single-roomed cafe as tortured writers sit enraptured in their favorite author's prose. In the back kitchen, two or three waify waiters lounge around the underground...

...even more trashy games and retro chic, head to virgin.net/games for mini-golf, pool, football and celebrity trivia, and the world-renowned "big ass card game." For the Garbage-Pail-Kid generation, Pacman, Frogger and Arkanoid are still alive and kicking. Comfort and practicality dictate each stitch of the chef pant. From their elastic waist to their tapered ankle to their baggy leg, these products of utilitarian chic can make or break the cooking experience of any nouveau chef. Traditionally made from swatches of dense checkered cloth or European hound's tooth, the pants' durable fabrics hide the tell-tale stains of sizzling sauces, sauteed entrees and crackling oil. Although such traditional patterns do add to the lifespan of any uniform, they also connote a certain type of old-school chef network that many younger chefs wish to move away from...

...ugly crime, an unsuspected gift for intellectual detective work and, eventually, a romantic attachment to Washington's character as the two try to ensnare a particularly unpleasant serial killer. The movie doesn't stand up to close, logical parsing. But Noyce's direction is atmospheric in the dank, currently chic manner; his actors spunky and attractive; and the path to the final, rather conventional, revelation is strewn with grotesque and suspenseful difficulties. It's kind of fun--if you have the stomach for its more grisly passages...
