That upscale market is still burgeoning, but Indian motifs have lately found their way back into street chic as well. When fashion mingles with the street, it is hard to pinpoint how the trend began. The hit 1990 film Dances with Wolves brought Native American culture into sharp visual focus. Rappers like TLC were among the first to embrace the look: wide chokers, clunky bolo ties (often on bare chests), fanciful belts. Other rockers -- Lenny Kravitz and Jon Bon Jovi -- have followed along. Janet Jackson flaunts a white-shell-and- silver Mummy's Bundle choker on her new videos...

That's the secret, really. Don't write out "TIME!!!" in inch-high scrawl--it only brings out the sadist in us. Write on both sides of the page--single bluebook finals look like less work to grade, and win points. THis chic, shaded calligraphic script so many are affecting lately is handsome, and is probably worth a good extra five points if you can hack it. But above all, keep us entertained. Keep us awake. Be bold, be personal, be witty, be chock full of facts. I'm sure you can do it all without studying...

What exactly is p.c.? By now it has degenerated into an all-purpose term of political abuse that means little more than "a view I disagree with." But it is meant to suggest a stifling orthodoxy, an intolerance of opposing views that verges on censorship, victimization chic and a stagy oversensitivity to robust remarks. All these elements have lately surfaced on the right, most noticeably in controversies over Clinton Administration nominees...

Attacks on alleged political correctness are themselves often attempts to narrow the range of permissible debate and embrace the chic of victimization. In a May commencement speech about the new intolerance, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas complained that "a new brand of stereotypes and ad hominem assaults are surfacing across the nation's college campuses, in the national media, in Hollywood and among the . . . 'cultural elite' " aimed at "those who dare to disagree with the latest ideological fad." If anyone has ever actually prevented Thomas from expressing his views, I would like to hear of it. Vigorous dissent...

...contemporary art in Paris with a Warhol clone named Jean-Pierre Raynaud. His bright idea was to imprint 15,500 white ceramic tiles with the same photo of a Neolithic human skull and cover the walls of the French pavilion with them. As an exercise in prim, sterile chic, it's unbeatable. Australia is not short of talent, but the political correctness of its official cultural life has sent to Venice the whiny postfeminist images of Jenny Watson. Her paintings (of a victimized self, plus horses, with braids of hair pinned to the canvas) are comically ill done. This...
