...trying to name all the emerging genres and somebody came up with the catchall name MPB, which stands for "musica popular brasileira." Basically any new music from Brazil could fit in this category, making long explanations like this one unnecessary. Milton Nascimento (who's at Rock in Rio), Chico Buarque (one of Brazil's finest songwriters), Ivan Lins (another revered songwriter) and Gal Costa (one of the country's most beloved vocalists) could all safely be filed under...

Born in Victoria, B.C., Furtado, 21, is the child of Portuguese immigrants. As a grade schooler, she played a variety of instruments, including ukulele and trombone, but her real musical awakening came when she started listening to Brazilian artists such as Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze and Chico Science. "Portuguese music I love, but when I discovered Brazilian--that's when I was like, 'Yeah!'" she says. "Not just because it's sung in Portuguese, which I understand and speak, but because it's got all these great rhythmic elements, and there are just so many great Brazilian records...

Sarney Filho, the federal Environment Minister and son of the pro-development former President. In Acre, the frontier state where environmental martyr Chico Mendes was assassinated in 1988 by ranchers angered by his efforts to halt deforestation, change is more drastic. With financial aid from the International Olympic Committee, which helps promising athletes from developing countries, Edwin arranged to bring Williams to the U.S. for her first taste of high-quality training. He also persuaded Nike to sponsor her. As a result, Williams in Sydney is a model of athletic chic. But even in garish red spikes and a cutting...

...fiasco reminds us of Bob Dole's fall from the stage in Chico, Calif., late in his 1996 campaign. It wasn't anything in particular that Dole did, but the mishap confirmed some of the worst fears about the candidate: that he was old, had old policies and was running a faltering campaign. The same might be said here too for Bush. The ad makes him look underhanded and excessively juvenile in a frat-boy kind of way. Coming after last week's barnyard epithet, it makes the "change the tone, bring honor and dignity" crusade look a little thin...
