Some of the contraptions: a jack (see cut); a turnspit driven by the draft of a chimney; a machine for cutting files and rasps; a printing press with movable type; an olive oil press such as is still used in Italy; a pile driver; an automatic saw; an automatic gear, like the differential in an automobile; a flying machine, whose bird-like wings were supposed to be powered by the operator...

...hours, no sign from the conclave. Then, at noon, the first sfumata-a curl of smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney -was seen. By the black smoke the watchers knew that no Pope had been elected during the two morning ballots...
...back to the walls. To show the crowds outside that "a Pope has been made," the ballots, which previously have been burned in the conclave stove with damp straw (to send up black smoke), are this time burned alone, and a thin wisp of white signals from the chapel chimney...
