...rebellious. For the moment they are more resentful of the price of the monetary union--budget cutting and unemployment--than of its audacious surrender of national power. Voters in France, where the jobless rate is 12.8%, made that clear with a massive rebuke to the government of President Jacques Chirac and his now outgoing Prime Minister Alain Juppe...
PARIS: The stunning victory by Lionel Jospin's Socialist Party over President Jacques Chirac's conservative coalition casts doubt over France's ability to meet the strict criteria for inclusion in a new European currency by 1999, reports Paris Bureau chief Thomas Sancton: "The questions are: Can they create new jobs? Can they stimulate consumption through raising purchasing power and at the same time meet the EU goals? Unless the Socialists' plans can be offset by tax increases -- and in France, taxes are the highest in Europe -- they are going to run up huge deficits. If they do that...
...PARIS: Chirac's decision to dissolve the National Assembly and call for early elections proved to be an enormous blunder, one which will severely weaken his administration and most likely shift the balance of power towards the new Socialist prime minister, Lionel Jospin. With its blame-the-immigrants economics, the Front has all but cornered France's far-right vote. But instead of allying with Chirac's conservatives, Le Pen has targeted them. Thursday he issued a list of mainly conservative candidates to defeat. Le Pen's contentiousness may cost Chirac his majority...
PARIS: France's highly unpopular Prime Minister Alain Juppe took the fall on Monday for President Jacques Chirac's humiliation in the first round of legislative elections. Loyally accepting the blame for two years of record unemployment, public spending cuts, wage freezes for state workers and general discontent with the government, Juppe said he will quit the premiership no matter what the outcome in next Sunday's runoff vote. It was Juppe who had persuaded Chirac to call for early elections, on the notion that their conservative coalition would fare better now than wait for next year's scheduled election...
