...marriage disintegrated, the great figure paintings and still lifes (31, 36, 37) began alternating with a sequence of brutally distorted female heads. Woman's Head and Self-Portrait, 1929 (38) is nothing less than a pictorial act of revenge: the savage, angular profile of Olga, with its chisel teeth and spike tongue about to devour the undistorted silhouette of Picasso's own profile. Its delirium is prolonged, in a different way, in the Surrealist beach scenes at Dinard, like Bather Playing with a Ball, 1932 (39), populated by elephantine, grotesque she-bathers who balloon on the sand...

...increasingly indulged himself in carving. Since 1965, he has spent his summers at Forte dei Marmi near the famous Carrara marble quarries. He sometimes spends whole days tramping over the quarries to find the right piece of stone. "I like the actual activity of carving. ...wreckers went to work, so did the fossil hunters. They hosed and washed more than 300 suspect stones, chipped at them with hammer and chisel and then examined every square inch of visible surface. By the second day, they had found two large blocks, weighing about 500 Ibs. each, that showed distinct fossil markings. Back in New Haven, Ostrom made precise measurements. Though the fossil bones still must be carefully removed from their brownstone encasement. Ostrom is now convinced that the long search is over. One of the visible bones, he says, is an almost sure match to half...

...glass and spun plastic to rust-sealing steel. Concrete used as a finished material is already giving visual variety to the city. "It is the most important change in the art of building since World War II," says Architect Marcel Breuer. "You can sculpt concrete, you can mold it, chisel it, increase the vocabulary of architectural expression...
