...streets, the clamor of crowded living; the neighborhood butcher's, where the housewife can leave her door key, and the corner delicatessen that stays open past midnight; the locksmith and the cobbler, and the florist's potted sidewalk garden; the front-stoop squads with time and chitchat on their hands; the old man gazing like a mute portrait from the frame of his second-story window; and the strangely silent Sunday morning, sweet with the smell of freshly washed streets...
Curt LeMay is not much of a hand for chitchat. When his aides, in reporting, begin to stray from the subject at hand, Curt is certainly curt: "Stop, you're talking nonsense." Recently subjected to an interview by a Washington pundit who seemed more anxious to make speeches than to ask questions, LeMay interrupted: "If you know all the damned answers, then what are you doing here?" LeMay is as hard-boiled a disciplinarian as exists in the high command of the U.S. armed forces. But he is renowned for backing his men when they make understandable mistakes...
...blood between two old men, Harry Truman, 76, and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, 80, came to a boil again. On a TV chitchat program in Chicago, Truman was asked point-blank if he had ever been pressured to use the A-bomb during the Korean fighting. Besides, Axel stills Albinus' qualms with a ploy at least as old as Restoration comedy: he confides to Albinus that he is really a homosexual. Soon clouds mass amid the comic lightning. After a series of tragic plot incidents, Albinus drives into a telephone pole, but lives on, blinded. What follows is more climactic and cruel than the book's actual ending. Axel silently shares the house and Margot, while the pair mulct the pitiable...
...present-day Opera Guilder never steps inside the Met, but the membership is bound together by its ritualistic devotion to the Met's Saturday afternoon radio broadcasts and by the guild magazine, Opera News, which combines first-rate scholarship with the kind of prompter's box chitchat that opera fans feed on. With dues at $6 and up, the guild has raised $2,000,000 for the Met, has paid for 14 new productions (including a new Ring cycle, a fine new Magic Flute, last year's Simon Boccanegra) and helped pay for dozens more...
