Today Michigan's proud boast is that it can make anything. It manufactures more cars, corn flakes and chloromycetin than any other state, commonwealth or country. Dynamic Detroit may have less charm than any other great U.S. city-but it has more factories. It is the symbol to the world of U.S. industrial genius...
What to Do? Most of the dangerous staph are immediately found to be resistant to penicillin and streptomycin. They show descending orders of resistance to the tetracyclines (Aureomycin, Terramycin, Achromycin) and chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin). Strains have emerged that show varying resistance to still newer antibiotics. Strangely, nobody knows exactly how severe the problem is because most deaths caused by staph are not so listed. Chloromycetin had been by far the best drug against typhoid. ¶ Britain's Medical Press suggested a new feature of social medicine. "The house wife . . . cannot present her husband with a medical certificate and take a few weeks' sick leave; she has to carry on ... until she is literally unable to stagger around the house." Since a woman could use sick pay to hire help while she got a rest, the journal...
