...antibiotics." Actually, the new wonder drugs (like neomycin, see below) have been comparatively scarce and expensive because they had to be grown, slowly and tediously, from molds. Last week Detroit's Parke, Davis & Co. made a dramatic announcement: the first practical synthetic production of an important antibiotic, chloromycetin. The process means that chloromycetin will be quickly and cheaply available for any doctor. It may also point the way to mass production of other antibiotics...
Last spring a five-man team of doctors at the British Institute for Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur, about 200 miles from Singapore, began treating victims of scrub typhus with the new antibiotic* called chloromycetin (TIME, Nov. 10). The doctors checked again, found that the two third-day patients actually had typhoid fever. They picked eight cases of known typhoid fever, again reduced the fever in three days. Three cases of typhoid in Baltimore hospitals later responded the same...
Doctors hesitate to make claims on the basis of only 13 cases, but chloromycetin (which is still scarce) is definitely promising against typhoid...
...Doctors are experimenting with at least 122 promising antibiotics. But only the Big Two-penicillin and streptomycin-are widely used on human patients. Runners-up: Aerosporin, chloromycetin, bacitracin, polymixin, gramicidin...
...Chloromycetin is related to streptomycin, but unlike streptomycin it can be taken by mouth without harmful results. What excites researchers most: in animal tests it has proved a potent cure for certain rickettsial diseases, caused by tiny, bacteria-like organisms that have resisted previous "wonder drugs...
