Newspapers are filled with announcements, widely ignored or disbelieved, of new rules encouraging private enterprise and foreign investment, and Burma is no longer officially termed a socialist republic...

...foreigners get tired of spotting us, interest rates will shoot up, and we'll have a recession; or, as the trade deficit narrows, domestic and export demand will combine to create inflation; or, the burning of Brazilian rain forests will deprive the world of oxygen, and we'll all choke to death; etc. But the sky hasn't fallen. And trying to persuade people it's going to fall any minute is probably not the best way to build a consensus on the next step...
Where there's a will there's a way. Put a choke hold on your desire to be perceived as a tasteful, responsible citizen and you can get laughs out of anything: Hitler (The Producers), sacrilege (Life of Brian) and, yes, Latin American dictatorships (The In-Laws). All you really risk is the outrage of people whose senses of humor screech to a halt when it comes to their most cherished beliefs...
