Musicians, a choral fairy tale based on Grimm. Costumed soloists-donkey, dog, cat and rooster-almost turned the piece into a little opera...
...Glee Club has apparently done its work too well. By sponsoring the freshman group, it obtained a reservoir of trained voices which it can never possibly-use. It also interested a great many students in choral work who now have no chance to continue singing. The three regular upperclass singing groups--the Dunster Dunces, the Krokodiloes, and the Bach Society Chorus-- are entirely different from the Glee Club. They are much smaller. Moreover, the special choruses which sing in operetta performances throughout the year often consist largely of regular Glee Club members...
...number of applicants for its 25 open places, the Glee Club itself is in a very healthy position. But many of its aspirants who failed to qualify are now stranded without a group to sing for. Through its sponsorship of the freshman chorus it has greatly increaser participation in choral singing at Harvard. Comic Lewis is at his best when he is wildest: he gives a fine take-off of a choral conductor, dances insanely, impersonates Tough Guy Humphrey Bogart. Partner Dean Martin is better as a straight comic than as a singer. Otherwise, as the team goes through some tired slapstick movie routines, e.g., a chase on water skis, moviegoers may conclude that Martin & Lewis are headed for the fate that befell Abbott & Costello: all they do is make money...
...rest of the show was no sprig of lilac, but much of it was engagingly different. As coordinated as a precision instrument, Walter Schumann's choral group managed to sound now like an entire circus, again like the string section of a symphony orchestra. Harry Belafonte, singing blues, calypso and spirituals, turned out to be a topnotch TV personality. Best of all were witty Dancers Marge and Gower Champion, who can make their sophisticated routines look joyously impromptu. All in all, 3 for Tonight proved that skill and imagination can be more fun than a lot of expensive scenery...
