...songs themselves were faithful renditions, harsh, chord-oriented, charged tunes, that did, it's true, tend to run together a bit. I suspect the majority of the crowd was unfamiliar with the work as a whole (requests for Tommy were shut off with a brusque, "Where've ya been?"), and that hurt the performance some. Certain things were revealed: Townshend is a conservative guitarist--underneath the windmilling is a man who plays crisp licks and lines and is a master of transitions. He alternates finger-picking, chording and single notes with intelligence and grace, particularly...

...record this year too. But it was against Penn, not Yale, and besides Stoeckel was working on orders from the bench. What is more, a nickname like "Endzone Stoeckel" just doesn't make it. It doesn't have that assonance, that rhyme, that "Endzone Crone" that struck a responsive chord deep within every Harvard...

...songs used in the film are as welcome as familiar friends. Everyone has moments of self-pity or absorbing anger, and Young is skillful at striking that self-obsessed chord in all of us. But his skill, or at least his elusiveness which passes for subtlety, started to crumble with his last album, Harvest. In Journey Through the Past, it breaks down altogether; Young wields images like a lumberjack swings an ax. Any self-respecting director would have kept such nonsense out of public theaters...

...mighty pretty song to be singing about a whore," Sherrill encouraged gently, "but say 'lady' a little faster, Dave; she's a fast lady." He turned to the band. "Don't get loud there at first when you go into the five chord, because he is whispering something filthy to her." The three guitarists, drummer and bass player nodded, jotting down numbers and symbols on scraps of paper to indicate chords and dynamics...
