...meanwhile, is an area where states want to tread lightly, as few elected officials on either side of the aisle have taken issue with the policy goal of making a quality higher education equally accessible to all. The point of contention is over how to get there. But the chorus of affirmative action dissenters is undeniable, and now that federal courts have ruled against the practice, it seems only a question of time until more states...
...another greatest-hits-with-a-few-new-songs album. Unfortunately, it shows Cracker hasn't really made any good songs since 1993, when their Kerosene Hat album came out. It had "Low," the best Cracker song (it's the one with the huge, buzzing guitar opening and the chorus "Be with you girl/Like being low/Hey Hey Hey like being stoned"). "Low" is not a first-class grunge anthem only because it was too simple and was never canonized. It was probably never canonized because Cracker are always fashioning themselves as hayseeds...
...ancient curse. A well-mannered, blushing maiden. A would-be Baronet masquerading as a farmer. A village lunatic. An elderly spinster. Mix all of these elements together with a troupe of professional-and equally blushing-bridesmaids, add a chorus of dead Baronets, toss in a generous pinch of satire and a large dash of energetic singing and dancing, and you have none other than Ruddigore, or the Witch's Curse, presented by the Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert and Sullivan Players...

For the meantime, their engaging singing and dancing relieves them of vain longings for marriage, although by the end of the show Zorah seems to have found herself a mate, and one assumes that the other seven Bridesmaids will soon follow. The Bridesmaids shine in the ensemble numbers, such as their opening song...
Score one for private enterprise. Two years ago, Craig Venter drew a rousing chorus of harrumphs (and a few "yeah, rights") from government scientists when he said that his genetics research firm, Celera Genomics, could map the human genome three times faster than the feds and at a fraction of the cost. The Human Genome Project, after all, is one of the most closely watched federal science projects of recent memory. In the abstract it stands to become one of the great scientific breakthroughs by promising to crack nature's code for what makes us who we are - and, presumably...
