...rhythm section of the band turned out a record this week called "How Long How Long Blues" and "Boogie-Woogie" that swings quietly . . . Jimmy Dorsey celebrated his tenth anniversary about a month ago. You'd think he would have run out of ideas by now, but his alto chorus on "All of Me" is really one for the books. Helen O'Connell's vocal shows much improvement, being more like Mildred Bailey, but is still too stiff. Listen to Bobby Byrn backing Helen's vocal, and figure out whether he plays trombone or trumpet...
...production was one of the finest the Metropolitan has mounted in years. Aside from the fact that it was sung in Italian, it would doubtless have pleased hard-drinking neurotic Modeste Moussorgsky, who, when he wrote the opera in 1873, attempted to make the People the protagonist, gave the chorus a great "Revolutionary Scene," in which he planted ideas which did not come to fruit in Russia until 1917. This scene, which ends with a song sung by an idiot (signifying plenty), underscores its point, as the curtain falls, with red fire in Russia's sky in the backdrop...
...offered is any one of Count's solos wherein you get his weird boogie piano backed by rhythm which is quiet, but which seems to say "Out of our way, we've swing to play." Get the Count to play you some slow blues with Jimmy Rushing singing a chorus, Lester Young playing clarinet, and piano by Mr. Basic himself; then go home and see if you still like Clinton...
...Metropolitan Opera completed a Ring of the Nibelung cycle, thereby accomplishing for the ninth successive year one of the greatest mechanical labors required of the stage. The four full-length Ring operas lasted a total of 14 hours, required 18 complete changes of scene, 34 major singers, a large chorus, 80 stage hands and technicians, an orchestra of 114, ten full beards, one horse. Richard Wagner's masterpiece contains practically every theatrical trick except Eliza crossing the ice-swimming Rhine maidens, a roaring dragon, a rainbow, galloping Valkyries, a Nibelung forge going full tilt, quantities of magic fire...
...trouble with the record is that "Stardust," on the other side, has some of the worst recording this reviewer has ever heard. The turn-table on the recorder was varying so badly when the record was made that it changes key about every thirty seconds ... Listen to the first chorus of Art Shaw's "Rose Room." The rest is not so good. Casa Loma turns loose a rather weird sense of humor, recording "The Old Oaken Bucket" under the title of "Hoboken Bucket" ... Funny thing that Benny Goodman's best records in the last year have been note for note...
