...musical back toward what they term romance. Ironically, Lloyd Webber (Evita) and Prince (Sweeney Todd) have been leaders in the movement to push musicals beyond traditional boy-meets-girl accessibility. Yet their Phantom is unquestionably a love story, just as much for the heroine, a baffled girl from the chorus, as for the masked enigma who spirits her down to the labyrinthine bowels of the Paris Opera House to teach her to become a star...

Toward the end of True Stories there is a down-home talent show, replete with dueling auctioneers and a chorus line of just plain folks wrapped in Old Glory. What makes the scene -- pure performance art -- so arresting, though, is not its content but its location. In the X-ray light of the setting sun, each catwalk and scaffold of a makeshift stage stands silhouetted against the empty spaces of the plains. So who can blame Composer Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line), 42, if his latest project sounds the least little bit as if it could be called A Beauty Pageant? Actually titled Smile and loosely based on the 1975 film of that name, the show chronicles three days of competition and camaraderie among a group of high school contestants in a California beauty pageant. Some 3,000 girls auditioned for the 16 roles in the musical...

...Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in southern Africa. Two weeks ago Manpower Minister Pieter du Plessis gave Tutu a "friendly warning" that his calls for sanctions against South Africa "border on high treason." Last week Andries Treurnicht, head of the far-right Conservative Party, joined the chorus by demanding that Tutu be "dealt with immediately...
