...begins with traditional Peking opera: a singer-dancer intoning a sacrifice ritual in Chinese. (You'll get subtitles in the theaters, as we at the Met got translations on the backs of the seats we were facing.) Behind him, on 12 rows of bleachers than span the stage, a chorus of about 150 keened along. Once the plot kicks in, though, the music becomes westernized and, to these inexpert ears, neither daring in form nor instantly appealing in tune. The color scheme ?? rigid and vivid in Hero, wonderfully lurid in Golden Flower ? is not so much subtle here as absent...

...Company,” which runs at the Loeb Ex through Jan. 12, was originally a series of short stories, and it shows: each couple and girlfriend gets their or her vignette and then fades into the chorus. Robert is the only character who shows significant development; the others are more like snapshots of various dysfunctional New Yorkers. The lives and loves of unhappy Manhattanites are hardly underrepresented topics in fiction, but both the play and the production are witty enough that the characters, while familiar, aren’t at all tiresome...

...France rejects affirmative action as incompatible with its republican ideals of color-blind equality for all citizens. Nice in theory, but that's not working in practice: discrimination continues, inequality is rife, and notions of color-blindness don't square with the rising chorus of racially loaded commentary. Color-blindness may also function to keep France blind to racial discrimination and inequality, but the rising tide of anger in the projects and racist chatter in the mainstream suggests that the French may soon have no choice but to openly confront what color-blindness prefers...

...Baghdad isn't the only place where patience for Maliki is wearing thin. While in public President Bush has always expressed support for him, the White House has begun to signal its unease. Even Bush joined the chorus of voices condemning the way Maliki's government handled the execution of Saddam Hussein. And disagreements over strategy are becoming more apparent. For example, Maliki had pressed Bush to move U.S. troops from central Baghdad to the edge of the city, leaving the volatile downtown area in the hands of Iraq security forces. Instead, the White House's emerging strategy has most...
