When Ted Kennedy, lacking conspicuous qualifications, secured himself the Democratic nomination, he took on certain obligations. In the ensuing campaign he disregarded all of them. The refusal to debate with his Republican and Independent opponents might have been excusable if the candidate chose some other forum to set forth and defend his program. But Ted's candidacy served no expository function; he did not present the New Frontier goals to the voters of Massachusetts. Lacking imagination, humility and conviction, the youngest Kennedy substituted a smile, a slogan, and a great deal of money. The best that can be said...
Swoboda wisely chose a first program that was very gratifying to his players, as well as to his listeners. Frescobaldiana revelled in bombast, the Hary Janos Suite, in special effects; and the familiarity of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony easily overcame any distractions which the excellence of the piece might have created. Conductor Bentley Layton chose a wise program for his chamber orchestra, and performed it with security, confidence, and a very welcome accuracy. Layton apparently did his work with the orchestra before the concert. Last minute attempts to save a sinking orchestra were totally absent from his podium performance; he infused the orchestral sound with the proper delicacy and care...
