...sudden life-threatening illness and its aftereffects present a current crisis to contend with and avoid worrying about, on top of grieving for Dunne. These events acquire a new poignancy outside the year Didion chronicles: while the book was in the final stages of editing, Quintana died. Didion explicitly chose not to add an account of her daughter’s death to Magical Thinking. That fact in itself augments Didion’s refusal (in the book) to accept the possibility that Quintana could die, and gives a heartrending overtone of futility to Didion’s fierce maternal...
...capture Carmen’s allure. Similarly impressive were the vocal talents of Jennifer Baldwin Peden (real-life sister of Christina), who played Micaëla. With her dulcet soprano, Peden gave Micaëla’s introspective moments a rich and beautiful sadness. Interestingly, Dominique Serrand chose to direct “Carmen” in part because it had leading roles for these three particular performers. In the playbill he explains, “I wanted to stage a piece specifically for the group of singers I work with, and I wanted it to be about passion...
...French, with only 12 rescue workers and a couple of dogs, didn't know where to begin; everybody in Balakot was desperate for help. Their mangled bodies would slowly emerge, cradled in the arms of the rescue workers. The girls had worn green blouses, probably ironed that morning by their mothers; the boys wore gray. That night, three days after the temblor, the French managed to pull...

The Federal Government should eliminate the National Flood Insurance Program, which encourages construction in flood-prone areas. People shouldn't build fragile houses in tornado alleys, homes on hillsides that are vulnerable to mudslides, or cities in earthquake zones. People should make better choices. I hope, against all probability, that New Orleans will not be rebuilt. It would be a waste of lives, resources, effort and money. Walter Jeffries...
