...farm-raised bluefin tuna. The remarkable ingenuity shown in the hunt for new materials and products that don't stress the environment is reflected in our list, once again ably edited by senior writer Lev Grossman. One glowing exception to the trend is our invention of the year. We chose the Ares I rocket not only because it's a marvel of engineering but also for a symbolic reason: it's a link between a horrific past (the V-2 rocket used by Germany during World War II) and an optimistic future, in which we reclaim the dream of traveling...
...Appraising Sully's performance: "Chesley Sullenberger's qualities emerged in full force during the first few seconds of his emergency over the Bronx. In retrospect, what mattered most to his ultimate success was not what he did, but what he chose not to do, his shedding of distractions, the concentration that he brought to the crisis. It was an exceptional performance, easy enough to dream up in the abstract, but extremely difficult to execute in practice. His physical control of the airplane, however, is another matter, and though nearly flawless, less reflective of unusual skill." (Read...
...American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center and Inside the Sky: A Meditation on Flight, has little use for hagiography or hero worship. They [the Franken campaign] chose a strategy that allowed them to get more of their votes counted. We had a strategy based on equal protection. There were literally thousand of votes in Republican areas that still have not been counted. I have no regrets about fighting hard to get somebody’s vote counted...
...Admittedly, Garrido and the other organizers bear more than a little responsibility for the response. They're the ones, after all, who chose the instructors to lead the workshops: two women who, in addition to running sex-education workshops, co-own a shop in Madrid called Lola's Pleasures, which specializes in erotic devices. The instructors, who have given adult sex-education classes sponsored by municipal governments in other regions of the country, didn't help matters by bringing a selection of sex toys to the first teen workshop in late October in order "to dispel myths," Garrido says...
