Thanks to its renown as the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Bethlehem has long since ceased to be the "little town" described in the popular carol. Light counts for a great deal in Kossoff's work. The paint is never opaque; it contains streaks and underglows, akin to the suppressed radiance in Rembrandt's midtones. And there is atmosphere too.
