Last week the Rev. JERRY FALWELL, writing in USA Today, counseled Bill Clinton to resign or ask public forgiveness. His grounds: Scripture bids the leader, "Flee from all appearances of evil," and standards are "immensely higher for those who invoke the name of Christ, as Bill Clinton does." Falwell, however, may have a first-stone problem. In the Web magazine Salon, reporter MURRAY WAAS writes that a group called Citizens for Honest Government paid more than $200,000 to people who accused Clinton of such crimes as aiding an Arkansas cocaine ring. ...Pope Clement IX Rospigliosi commissioned Bernini to work on the Ponte Sant' Angelo project. For the next two years, the sculptor cast his ideas into clay, creating models for 10 over life-size marble angels, each carrying an instrument of Christ's Passion. John Walvoord, chancellor of the Dallas Theological Seminary, said the asteroid ?may be a foreshadowing of the second coming of Christ.? Dr. Edward Teller, the father of the H-bomb, advocated planting a nuclear device on its rocky surface. And -- surprise, surprise -- Marsden himself smiled meekly from the front page of Friday?s New York Times. Which could go a long way toward answering Don Yeomans? question...
...missionary community and the harsh social and physical landscape outside it reinforced the assumptions driving the missionary project in China: the unquestioned belief in the moral superiority of Christianity and the cultural superiority of America; and the commitment to show the way not just to the love of Christ but also to a modern, scientific social order. The image of America that Luce had as a child was the idealized one his father and other missionaries created to justify their work. It was an image Luce never wholly abandoned...
