Best Hope of Peace. For four days Dulles met with Britain's Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd, France's Foreign Minister Christian Pineau, and his own representatives from NATO capitals (he had already talked with Canada's new Prime Minister Diefenbaker-TIME, Aug. 5). In the forefront of Dulles' thinking, as he doodled, argued and explained in the musty committee chambers of Lancaster House, was this line of reasoning: 1) no nation that keenly feels itself in danger of attack is likely to reduce its arms; 2) with modern weapons of war, foreshortening time and space...
Nancy Wickwire is a beautiful and compelling Roxane; but she should look older at the end, for Rostand jumped ahead 15 or 16 years here, as Shakespeare had done in A Winter's Tale. Michael Higgins is excellent as the ardent but inarticulate Christian; he can convey earnestness as well as anyone in the company. Michael Lewis is a strong and brusque Comte de Guiche. Sorrell Booke makes a lovable Ragueneau, the baker whose heart lies in trying to write verse rather than in selling pastry (did anyone ever better deserve the name of poetaster?). And there are other laudable...
This British-style experiment in integration really started last spring. Anglican Jory, who has long run a camp for boys from the slums of Leeds, got a letter from the chaplain of Oxford's Pembroke College explaining that a group of Christian Fellowship undergraduates had offered to serve as counselors. The letter gave Jory another idea. Perhaps, he reasoned, the Oxonians might be just the people to give Borstal boys a glimpse into a world they had never known...
...nostalgic vision of classic Rome as an uncluttered prospect of soaring marble temples, each as immaculate as a white plaster model. The reality of the marketplace was far different. Most of its buildings were built of brick, wood and dingy stone until almost the beginning of the Christian era. The city itself, with a population that surpassed present-day Rome's 1,750,700, squeezed into an even smaller circumference, was a terrifying tangle of pedestrians, soldiers, horses, lurching sedan chairs and carts...
Binding Force. Today the Churches of Christ number some 1,200,000 baptized members in 15,000 fully autonomous churches. Brother Young is the nearest thing to a binding force among them; he edits Twentieth Century Christian, a monthly magazine promoting Churches of Christ beliefs, writes and edits (with his wife Helen) a bimonthly of daily devotional reading called Power for Today, and a weekly column for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. Next week he leaves Lubbock for Los Angeles, where he will head George Pepperdine College, one of four senior colleges run on Churches of Christ principles and supported...
