Blackmore was part of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was expelled from mainstream Mormonism in the 1930s. For generations, local farmers co-existed with the polygamists of Bountiful. But this relationship, based on the country tenet "live and let live," grew increasingly uneasy over time as strange stories of life within the settlement leaked...

...from the external world, be it philosophy, aesthetics, even democracy, which was introduced to the Jews in the last 200 years because of our interface with the the world. On the other hand, I can't imagine my Western civilization and Western culture without the Jewish input, without Jesus Christ, who was born, was crucified and passed away as a Mishnaic rabbinical Jew. Then, too, they've screwed around with Klaatu, played now by Keanu Reeves, stripping him of all Christ-like attributes and turning him into a zombie-like figure, awash in ambiguity; once he gets to meet a few humans he see that they're really not such bad sorts after all. The guy was never a ton of fun, but formerly he was at least a figure of moral weight and - especially rare in popular entertainments - a believably brainy one, a kind of public intellectual before that egregious term was invented. Now he's pretty much a drip...
