...does it so well he routinely wins re-election by close to 70%--and was considering a run for statewide office. His district is conservative but hasn't balked at a lifestyle that's surprising for the son of a Baptist minister. His wife, who suffers from a chronic illness, has never moved to Washington. He likes night spots, parties, stogies and rock concerts (he once jumped into a mosh pit). A Harley driver, he posed for raunchy biker magazine Easyriders and a spoof calendar called Hunks on the Hill...

Others are not so sure. In a study published in 1999, Mayo Clinic researchers concluded that mold causes most chronic sinus infections. Even more alarming, several researchers believe that molds can cause some types of brain damage. Wayne Gordon, a neuropsychologist, and Dr. Eckardt Johanning, both of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, have seen enough patients whose problems with memory, learning and concentration occurred only after exposure to stachybotrys to convince them there is a relationship. Still, they concede, more research is needed...

...Haven, Conn., and Valhalla, N.Y., followed 129 patients who had previously been treated for well-documented cases of Lyme disease. Sixty-four were given antibiotics directly into their veins for a month, followed by two months of oral antibiotics. The others received dummy medications. A third of the chronic Lyme patients got better while taking the antibiotics, but so did a third of those on the placebo. Indeed, the results were so similar that a monitoring board decided to cut the trials short rather than add more subjects to the test groups...

Unfortunately, the debate over chronic Lyme has become so heated that no one expects the controversy to go away. But both sides may take comfort in the other findings that were released by the New England Journal last week. After studying 482 subjects bitten by deer ticks in a part of New York with a lot of Lyme disease, researchers concluded that a single 200-mg dose of doxycycline dramatically cut the risk of contracting the disease. That good news is tempered somewhat by the fact that 80% of patients who develop the infection don't remember ever being bitten...

...depth of the rifts within the party, particularly over the E.U. and British entry into the common currency, a bitter leadership battle seems unavoidable. But choosing a leader is the least of the Tories' concerns. The party faces not only another term in opposition but also signs of chronic decline. Party leaders have given up trying to spin the election results. Portillo has called the overwhelming Blair victory "catastrophic"; one Conservative M.P. last week admitted that the Tories are hurtling toward third-party wilderness...
