Both ways seem equally valid. The F.U.s have just released an E.P., Kill for Christ, which at first sounds exquisitely boring. The album's title, and several of its songs, trivialize protest by whining like Holden Caulfield. The music is mostly speeded-up Chuck Berry riffs, with not-so-iconoclastic lyrics like "Weekends rule, and that's a fact/Gotta do it to the max." This theme has been exploited more successfully by the Beach Boys...

...possibility. Somewhere past the dense cloud of Urbanity, past subways and corporations, past designer jeans and city cowboys, past Dan Rather, issues and answers, terrorists, rallies, sold-out Rolling Stones tours and French Maitred's, beyond all that a sleepy town of backroad America lies waiting. ...sunset long ago. Yet they hang on, as evidenced by Vanishing Breed (New York Graphic Society; 144 pages; $29.95). More than 100 evocative photographs catch ranch hands and horses in landscapes where the Old West and the new one jostle for position: an AM-FM portable rests on a chuck wagon; pickup trucks wait outside wilderness taverns; mud-and blood-spattered rodeo riders hanker after Stetsoned girls who put Vaseline on their teeth to enhance their smiles. William Albert Allard's pictures catch it all, with a unique mixture of regard and regret...
