Born Jean-Marie Scherer in the province of Lorraine, Rohmer moved to Paris, taught literature, worked as a reporter, wrote a novel. In 1950 he co-founded the Gazette du Cinéma with two other future filmmakers, Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard. Within a few years they - and François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol - were writing for Cahiers du Cinéma, which Rohmer edited from 1956 to 1963. No film magazine was so influential as Cahiers...

Earlier this month, the Cinématheque Français in Paris was ordered by Métrobus to remove or mask another purported subliminal call to start smoking: legendary filmmaker Jacques Tati's equally legendary pipe. The Cinématheque's ad for its Tati exhibition uses a shot from the 1958 film My Uncle, featuring the filmmaker in his iconic pose: riding a Solex, decked out in felt hat and overcoat, signature pipe clenched between his teeth. If the old-fashioned tradition of cinemagoing is to continue, in fact, it may be only in places like Cannes that the great smorgasbord of the movie...

...deficit late in regulation to grab the lead over Iona. “We just cracked down on defense,” senior Michael Garcia said, “and turned it into offense.” With only two ticks left on the clock, Gael sophomore Patrick St. Cin scored to force the game into overtime. Enjoying the momentum from their improbable comeback, the Gaels dominated the extra time. Tied at ten, Iona scored the first three tallies in the extra period, securing a comfortable 13-10 lead over Harvard. A late Crimson rally put the Gaels back...
