Electronic matchmaking services have long enabled love-starved clients to choose dates by watching videotapes of potential companions. Now the Corporate Interviewing Network, a company based in Fort Lauderdale, is giving employers a chance to use a similar technique to screen job applicants. Firms using the service send CIN a list of job candidates. Then CIN arranges to videotape interviews with them at 19 regional offices from New York City to Los Angeles, using questions drafted by the employers. Within seven days after talking with the last candidate, CIN sends the employer a tape of the applicants...
...Wilmington (Del.) News Journal have rolled out separate, free tabloids to appeal to that missing demographic. Some, like the Washington Post Co.'s Express, appear daily and are newsy, boiled-down versions of the broadsheet. Others are weekly and focus more on entertainment and lifestyle, like Gannett's CiN Weekly in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Knight-Ridder's StreetMiami, produced by the Miami Herald...
...compete. And that's why many industry insiders are calling for a revolution in the way films are funded and distributed. In France, Italy and Germany, new laws pledge more support to films with mass appeal. Even though the independent theaters receive national subsidies in the tens of thousands of euros per screen, "it will be tough for theaters like ours in the next few years," says Daniel Cartier, projection manager at the illustrious Le Champo cinema, which has been run by the same family since 1939. Despite the theater's overall historic popularity, a recent James Bond revival...
...theme parks. It's fine on the inside, but boxy and dull outside. No surprise, then, that the Studios are aimed at an older audience than Disneyland. "We're trying to attract a 'new' public with cinema and some-thing a little more pedagogical," says CEO Jay Rasulo. CinéMagique, a clever retrospective of memorable moments from American and European film, does that well. But this is still family vacation terri-tory. Will that Flying Carpet ride, one (admittedly cool) stunt show and a work-shop where they can draw Mickey be enough to keep kids from saying...
