...that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia handles emergency appeals from Mississippi, which is convenient for the Republicans. Scalia personally swore in Chip Pickering as a congressman in 1997 and is a friend of the congressman's father, U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pickering, whose nomination to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals is snarled in the Senate. Democrats again cried foul and tried, unsuccessfully, to get another Supreme Court Justice to block the federal judges' plan. The Dems are now trying to convince the full court to overrule Scalia. Count on this battle to go the full fifteen rounds...

...embarrassing and unfortunate to have to agree with our legion of detractors, but unfortunately the evidence is simply overwhelming. Each and every weekend night sees Harvard students swarming around the Square in search of Thai food, ritzy cocktails and occasionally, for variety, the effete charms of the a cappella circuit. To many undergraduates these activities seem like perfectly acceptable ways to pass the time between the early evening reruns of “Third Rock From The Sun” and bedtime. ...allegedly hoped to cover up the crime, Charles Schwarz, Thomas Wiese and Thomas Bruder, were charged and found guilty of obstructing justice. Schwarz, who was identified as the second officer in the bathroom during the attack, was also convicted of violating Louima's civil rights. Thursday, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the obstruction-of-justice convictions, citing lack of evidence. Schwarz's civil rights conviction was returned to the lower court, where prosecutors hope to initiate a new trial within the next six months. Volpe's sentence is not affected...
