...years of his pontificate, Pope Pius XI has given the world his views on countless holy and mundane subjects, in innumerable informal messages and in 28 encyclicals or circular letters. During his grave illness of the past four months, however, His Holiness was generally thought to have said his last say. But the doughty Pontiff heartened his flock by rallying toward the beginning of Lent, and last week Pius XI released his 29th encyclical, a 13,000-word denunciation of Communism, suddenly and startlingly followed this on Palm Sunday with No. 30, addressed to the faithful of Germany and forecasting...

Omitted from the Court Circular, usually meticulous in announcing movements of members of the Royal Family, was a luncheon at Buckingham Palace last week of the Queen Mother, the King and Queen and the Earl & Countess of Athlone. This was to consider the draft of a financial settlement for the Duke of Windsor brought from Austria by Sir Walter Monckton, and the Royal Family had to face among other matters the Duke's demand that provision be made not only for himself during his lifetime but for Mrs. Simpson, irrespective of whether he lives or dies. She acted the part of Ganymede with...

This was announced in the Court Circular, omission of such weekly notice having been what first put the clergy onto Edward VIII, long before they heard of Mrs. Simpson. On Monday there were cheers for His Majesty among brokers on the Stock Exchange. The King sent to have read for him in Parliament an address in which he specifically promised "to uphold the honor of the realm." Her Majesty could not go to church and has been staying indoors with "influenza" for some time. Happy rumors rippled in London that Queen Elizabeth may have...

...King George VI (depending on which name he prefers to use) within a few hours or days, and at 1:31 a. m. King Edward VIII shoots out of Buckingham Palace, driving at terrific speed to his snuggery. Lights out at 2:13 a. m. The daily Court Circular, which is supposed to chronicle all important movements of members of the Royal Family, omits all of the above, fails to appear. The House of Commons: There are cheers for Stanley ("Old Sealed Lips") Baldwin and louder cheers for his political foe Winston Churchill...
