Despite its apparent fragmentation, Chelsom's directing soaks the film in an amibiance of insanity and tragicomedy, with the assistance of assorted morgues, haunted houses, circus tents and chorus girls. His unconventional and unsettling angles clutch the viewer in a graphic documentary style. A soundtrack of Bayou blues and French sailor songs as forgotten as the stage acts they accompany complements the screen action, and assures "Funny Bones" a place in the cult film firmament...
...Broadway Market Place has largely been worth the long wait, providing residents of Broadway, Ware and Prescott streets with a scaled-down version of bread and Circus or a "mini-Barsamians," as it were, and it happily replaces the old Broadway Market, which had deteriorated into little more than a utilitarian eyesore. How wonderful it has been to be treated to the sight of fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, cheese and a relaxing place to sit, all in a refreshing new building...
After several months in operation, however, market management has unfortunately decided to ensure that the Bread and Circus analogy goes no further than the nearest cash register, by caving in to a few customers who have complained that cigarettes are not easily found in this part of Cambridge. Mugler served at least one important function: bring in the clowns, the bearded ladies, the acrobats. It's all downright nostalgic. --Reported bY Greg Burke/Rome, Dorie Denbigh/Paris, Barbara Rudolph and David E. Thigpen/New York
From between the heavy draperies of House majority whip Tom DeLay's first-floor Capitol office, a bizarre scene could be glimpsed outside. In the normally quiet, heavily guarded parking lot, 13 elephants from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus were parading trunk-in-tail across the East Plaza, leading an entourage of dancing dogs and clowns on stilts. At the center of the mini-circus, a beaming Speaker Newt Gingrich shared a ring with a 14,762-lb. elephant named King Tusk. Touching off what would become a daylong stampede of inevitable jokes, the Speaker announced that...
