Variations on "America" is "a blue-sky, apple-pie kind of ballet. If it misses the intensity of some of Feld's longer works, it also lacks their some times disturbing undertones. A circus of bravura set pieces, it may well join Le Corsaire, Don Quixote and similar pas de deux as staples of gala pro grams. Variations is bound to tempt other virtuoso pairs. There are two reasons, however, why it may not look quite the same: Christine Sarry and Mikhail Baryshnikov...
Some admit to multiplying quality by the quantity of quality, however, and that could explain why Bob Dylan is getting divorced in Malibu instead of strumming some tunes at the Equinox Street Performers Music Fair this Sunday. But its a three-ring-circus of a fair in three different halls of the Old Cambridge Baptist Church, and if that isn't his idea of atmosphere...
Soft-Core Reality. A series of shorts on wacky subjects: a rampaging native plant of Georgia called Kudzu, the miniature circus Alexander Calder made out of odds and ends and could bring to life for his friends, and a celebration of pigs splashing around in their slop. Six shorts...
...distant places was an occasional vacation in Florida's Walt Disney World with Sybil and the six kids (ages five months to 20 years). Now he travels as much to get out of Plains as to garner honorariums. Says Billy: "Hell, Plains is turning into a three-ring circus." So much so that Billy has been all but driven from his familiar haunts: a discarded school bus seat blocks access to the back room of the famous service station where he quaffs his afternoon beers, and nobody is admitted unless the employee who stands guard gives the O.K. Billy...
Fighting gallantly against a book that deep-sixes its protagonists by the halfway point is a sweatingly exuberant cast. Doing his annual turn as a blonde-coiffed mountain is the estimable Bob Peabody, whose delicate elephant walk and open-mouthed grin (in which a Sopwith Camel could do circus loops without destroying the bridgework) remind one of a cross between Everest and Margaret Dumont. He is a natural wonder and a natural comedian. Mark Szpak's slithering, thrilling Juana deBoise puts him in a class with Lupe Velez and Luis Tiant--all unintelligible delights. David Levi as Sonya Vabitsche looks...
