...BCC’s policy of mandatory confession is also subject to criticism. Members must confess all of their sins before they are allowed to be baptized by writing a letter to God stating all of their transgressions. Former members cite instances in which this information was shared by their disciplers with leaders and larger groups...
...website maintains that “following God must be a decision made from the heart, and not because one has been manipulated into blind obedience.” Yet critics cite physical and psychological control as another cult-like symptom of the BCC. Members are told that their church preaches the one true faith and that all non-members are going to hell. Leaders urge friendship only within the group and encourage members to live with one another. To leave the church is to leave God, they are told, and doing so is detrimental not only to one member...
...commission report, a scathing critique of the FBI's slipshod internal security practices, will cite a glaring lapse first disclosed in the book "The Spy Next Door," co-authored by this reporter and former TIME correspondent Ann Blackman: if FBI background investigators had looked at a widely available commercial database that lists vehicle registrations, they would have discovered that in August 1991, Hanssen bought a Mercedes for his paramour, stripper Priscilla Galey, and registered it in her name but at his home address. Methanex further disputes California's reasons for banning MTBE, saying benzene and other gasoline components are "more hazardous." It accuses California Governor Gray Davis of ordering the ban because he received campaign contributions from a U.S. manufacturer of ethanol. Davis denies the charge. State officials cite studies showing that MTBE causes cancer in lab animals and symptoms such as headache and nausea in humans. The federal EPA is also considering a ban. Unlike other gasoline components that stick to the soil when they leak, MTBE is unusually solvent, escaping from even reinforced tanks and moving rapidly into nearby water wells...
...reparations for descendants of African-American slaves or not, those who comment on the issue should be held to certain standards of reasoning. Horowitz does not meet any reasonable standard; he repeatedly uses historical half-truths to support his claims and uses unbelievable statistics whose source he does not cite. Horowitz claims that African-Americans should be thankful because they have benefited from slavery. Does this claim make any sense? Should African-Americans actually be thankful that they live in a wealthy country despite the reality that much of that wealth was created by subjugating their ancestors? It is silly...
