Died. Fairfax M. Cone, 74, advertising tycoon and public-spirited Chicago civic leader; after a long illness; in Carmel, Calif. Co-founder and director of Foote, Cone & Belding, he maintained that an ad should be a simple "substitute for talking to someone." He helped make Sara Lee, Kotex, Kleenex, Hallmark, Sunkist and even the doomed Edsel household names, but perhaps his most famous ad was for the American Tobacco account: "With men who know tobacco best... it's Luckies two to one."
