In addition to touching millions as a folksinger, Travers championed the causes about which she sang--including civil rights, the Vietnam War and the gay-rights movement. Fifteen years earlier, on April 4, 1968, Mrs. King had lost her husband, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to an assassin's bullet.
