Died. William Wallace Crapo, 95, "oldest ex-Congressman," "first citizen of New Bedford (Mass.)," famed lawyer, banker, industrialist; at New London. In 1876 the U. S. was brought almost to the verge of civil war by the dispute as to whether Samuel J. Tilden (Democrat) or Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican) had secured sufficient votes to elect him to the presidency. The House and Senate chose a Commission of seven Democrats and eight Republicans to adjudicate this matter.
